Overview

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered cororonavirus. Coronavirus are a family of viruses that can cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome MERS). In 2019 a new coronavirus was identified as the cause of a disease outbreak that originated in China.

The virus is now as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-Cov-2). The disease it causes is called coronavirus disease 2019. In march 2020, The World Health Organization(WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may appear two to 15 days after exposure. This time after exposure and before having symptoms is called the incubation period. Common signs and symptoms can include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Lost of taste or smell
  • Chills
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Runny nose

How It Spreads

The virus that causes corona virus is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes,or exhales. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air, and quickly fall on floors or surfaes.

You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within close proximity of someone who has COVID-19, or by touching a contaminated surface and then your eyes, nose or mouth.

Risk

People who are older have a higher risk of serious illness from coronavirus, and the risk increases with age. People who have existing chronic medical condition also may have a higher risk of serious illness. Chronic medical condition that increase the risk of serious illness from coronavirus inclde:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Severe obesity
  • Weakened immune system from solid organ transplants
  • Asthma
  • Liver disease
  • Serious heart diseases
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Brain and nervous system condition
